CHANGE ROOMS WANTED
AUCKLAND WATERSIDE WORKERS RESENTMENT AT POLICE SEARCH OF CLOTHES (P.A.) AUCKLAND, December 14. Asking for the provision of changeroom facilities at all wharf sheds, the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union to-day informed the Auckland Harbour Board that it would consider further action if no results had been achieved by the February stop-work meeting. The union said that detectives had searched clothing left by waterside workers in the steamer Waipiata during the evening meal break on November 18. “We respect the fact that the police must, of necessity, have fairly wide powers.” said the union, “but we also say that the ordinary citizen has certain fundamental rights. For the police to search the men’s clothing in the absence of any union representation is a gross infringement of those rights.” The provision of a room in which the men could change and leave their clothes under proper supervision and control was urgent, the union added. The request was referred to the board in committee.
