FREEZING WORKS LABOUR
• SECOND CHAIN NOT MANNED STAFFING CONFERENCE TO-DAY At the request of the freezing companies, representatives of the companies and the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ and Related Trades Union will meet at Belfast at 8 a.m. to-day to discuss the dispute which has arisen over the staffing of the works. This was announced by the union’s secretary, Mr H. G. Kilpatrick, yesterday afternoon. Few of the 35 men engaged for the second chain at Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd.’s, Belfast works attended for duty yesterday morning. Those who did attend met 200 other unionists at a meeting, which continued until 8.30 a.m. Only one chain worked. The chain at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works was idle for the .whole day because of shortage of stock. Because of the non-availability of enough men to work the second chain, deliveries of stock for to-day were cancelled, said Mr A. C. Wells, South Island manager for Borthwick’s. Yesterday 5000 lambs were on hand and another 5000 had been booked for tomorrow. The supply position was such that the second chain should have begun operations yesterday.
