SEOUL REGIME APPROVED
VOTE TAKEN IN U.N. ASSEMBLY
WATCH BY COMMISSION TO CONTINUE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PARIS, December 12. The United Nations Assembly, by 48 votes to 6, with Sweden abstaining, to-day approved the Government of the Republic of Korea, and decided to continue the Korean Commission for another year. The Russian bloc maintained its boycott of the commission. When the debate was resumed this afternoon, Mr Jakob Malik (Russia) carried on the Slav filibuster. Mr
Malik alleged that the United States had set up a puppet government to make ‘‘a happy hunting ground” for American capitalists. Most of the delegates met the Soviet filibuster with "a conspiracy of silence,” waiting for it to end so they could vote and leave for their homes. After the Czechoslovak delegate (Professor Prochazka) and the Jugoslav delegate (Dr. Ales Bebler) had supported Mr Malik’s attack on the Korean Commission and American policy in Korea, the Assembly voted approval of Korea and decided to continue the supervisory commission foi another year. The Assembly also approved a Canadian proposal to reduce the membership of the commission from nine, to seven. The Assembly’s final resolution recommended that the Russian and American occupying Powers should withdraw their forces from Korea as early as practicable. The seven members of the commission now are Australia, China, El Salvador. France, India, the Philippines, and Syria. After the vote the president (Dr. H. V. Evatt). declared the Assembly business closed.
