HOTEL WORKERS’ AWARD

NEGOTIATIONS TO BE RESUMED AGREEMENT REACHED WITH EMPLOYERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 13. Agreement has been reached for a resumption of negotiations between representatives of hotel workers and licensed victuallers for a new award for the licensed hotel industry. In a joint statement issued by the president of the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers’ Association (Mr F. H. Drewitt) and the secretary of the New Zealand Hotel Workers’ Federation (Mr F. G. Young) after a conference between the parties, it was announced that negotiations on the licensed hotel workers’ award, which expires on December 24, will be resumed in Wellington on January 19, and conciliation proceedings will be held on January 20 and 21. “To avoid any loss on the part of the workers, it has been mutually agreed that any monetary increases granted in the new award will be paid retrospectively to workers back to December 24,” said the statement. “Another matter which has been decided deals with the effect of the recent legislation known as the Public Holidays Amendment/ Act, which requires employers to give employees additional days off where certain holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday. Hotel workers did not get a day off on these holidays, but received instead double pay. This year, Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on Saturday x and Sunday. These holidays will automatically be changed to the next Monday and Tuesday, with the result that in some cases workers who prepare and serve the festive meals usually provided in hotels on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day may not receive the extra pay which would go to workers employed on the following Monday and Tuesday. To prevent this ■happening hotel workers who work on any one of the four days, December 25, 26, 27, or 28. will receive double pay for one day, and any worker working •two or more of those days will receive double time for two days. In this way, no workers will lose anything by the change of holidays. “The same applies to New Year’s Day, which falls on a Saturday, and will be held for award purposes on Monday. Any hotel worker employed on one or both of these davs will get double time for one day. and the same applies to Anniversary Day. which falls on Saturday. January 22. in the Wellington district, and Saturday. January 29, in the Auckland district”
