THE GOVERNORGENERAL
SIR B. FREYBERG IN AUSTRALIA
(Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA, Nov. 16. The Governor-General of Australia (Mr W. J. McKell) was present at a dinner in honour of the GovernorGeneral of New Zealand (Sir Bernard Freyberg) by Australian Ministers at Parliament House, Canberra, this evening. Mrs McKell gave a dinner party in honour of Lady Freyberg at Government House.
Sir Bernard Freyberg and Lady Freyberg arrived in Sydney by Tasman flying-boat yesterday afternoon for a tour of Australia. They were met at the Rosa Bay base by the Minister of the Army (Mr C. Chambers) on behalf of the Federal Government, and by service chiefs. They later flew on to Canberra and were received at Government House by Mr McKell. Flight Lieutenant N.' J. Cole and Captain Paul Freyberg also arrived at Government House.
Sir Bernard Freyberg said in Sydney that he and his wife hoped to see as much of Australia as possible in the time at their disposal. “In my job. I feel at a great disadvantage when visitors from America and Australia, travelling through New Zealand, talk about your great country,” he said. “I thought that the best thing I could do was to come and see as much as I could for myself. We hope to see the capital cities of Australia and the great industries, particularly the iron and steel industries. We also want to see your war veterans’ homes, particularly the one at Narrabeen, near Sydney. Two big veterans’ homes which we are preparing in the North and South Islands of New Zealand will be modelled on this."
