FUTURE OF RUHR INDUSTRY
MR MCNEIL EXPLAINS DECISION POWERS OF GERMAN GOVERNMENT (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 ss&.) LONDON, Nov. 18. Although a freely-elected German Government would decide the ultimate ownership of the Ruhr industries, that Government “must exercise its choice within the limits of the Military Government’s policy,” said the Minister of State (Mr Hector McNeil) in the House of Commons. Mr McNeil, who was speaking for the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin) said that the British and American decision to restore the Ruhr to German ownership did not mean that the Germans could choose to restore an excessive concentration of economic power or reinstate perspns who had furthered the Nazi Party’s aggressive designs. Mr McNeil said that the only objection had been from France, but the arrangements aigied at controlling German industry at a level which would give France security.
