TAULOCH’S GOOD TRIAL
RACING
KARTIKEYA AND ASCOT LAD ALSO WORK WELL
Rain fell during training at Riccarton yesterday when several horses with engagements on Saturday completed their semi-final gallops. The track became greasy later in the morning and affected the times of horses which were not among the earliest to work.
A gallop over a mile and a quarter on the plough by the New Zealand Cup candidates Ascot Lad, Kartikeya, and Coral Arc, and a good mile by the Derby candidate, Tauloch, attracted most attention. The outside of the course proper was open for galloping and was made the most use of. There was little activity on the plough. Ascot Lad and Kartikeya were together three lengths clear of Coral Arc after covering a mile end a quarter on the plough in 2min 14 3-sscc, the last mile, in Imin 47 3-ssec, and the last four furlongs in 63 2-ssec.
On the course proper Banshee drew away in the last few strides to beat Musselman and Magical by a length in Imm 4 4-ssec, the last four in 51 l-ssec. Faithful Pal was showing the way by half a length to Erinborough at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, the last four in 53sec. Faithful Pal could have finished clear. s Revolte ran right away in the straight to beat Treaty by 10 lengths and recorded Imin 47 2-ssec for the mile. They covered the first half in 53sec. Lord Cranleigh broke away four lengths clear of Golden Spa at the half-mile post, but the latter draw up in the straight and was on terms at the post to return 48 4-ssec. Both worked well. Military Chief just shaded Ballochbuie, with a gap of four lengths to Corofin at the finish of a mile in Imin 45 2-5 sec, the last half in 52 2-ssec. Corofin was galloped in behind the other two over the complete distance in an attempt to overcome his tendency to pull. Idle Jest just shaded Eulogize over a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec, doing the last halt easily in 56sec. Tauloch's Good Effort Sequoia was of little use to Tauloch over the final stages of a mile gallop. Sequoia broke away two lengths clear at the start, but the champion Auckland three-year-old soon drew abreast and then went on to finish six lengths clear to record Imin *44 4-ssec, the last half m 54 l-ssec. Tauloch had something in reserve at. the finish. Beaumaris again worked well and was half a length ahead of Robinfaye, with Boost four lengths away, at the end of four furlongs in 49 3-ssec. Over the same ground Heather Flight, with a lightweight up, recorded 50sec; Caronia and His Nibs, a likely-looking and wellgrown Gold Nib colt, 51 l-ssec; Swayup and Cardross, 52 3-ssec; and Marauder, 53sec. Trinidad covered five furlongs in Imin 4 l-ssec. the last four in 53sec, doing his work nicely. Excellency, the Stewards’ Handicap, topweight, was under a good hold while covering seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec, the last four in 53 l-ssec. Sorry covered the last four of seven furlongs in 52 2-ssec. Signal Officer, Langham, and Magnaform moved away from the mile post at three-quarter pace and came home easily over the last half in 55sec. Magnaform finished three lengths behind the other pair. APPEAL DISMISSED BY JUDGES
RIDER ON PAYMENT OF DIVIDENDS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 16. The Racing Conference appeal judges. Messrs J. Macfarlane Laing. J. Graham, and T. C. Lowry, to-day dismissed the appeal of F J. Cassidy and L. E. KerrTaylor, owners of the horse Ostentatious, against the decision of the Auckland District Committee, upholding the appeal ol J. M. Upfold. owner of The Fake, and declaring that horse winner of the Windsor Hack Hurdles, run at Avondale on July 17, in which race Ostentatious and The Fake were placed first and second respectively by the judge. The judges found that The Fake suffered grave and sustained interference from Ostentatious, which, in their opinion, must have materially interferred with the winning chance of The Fake. The judges ordered that the appeal deposit of £2O be forfeited. In a rider to their verdict, the judges stated that, although the deputy-stipen-diary steward and the stewards of the club knew, or should have known, that there was a complaint by a patrol steward, which w’as to result in an inquiry being held, the result of which might possibly affect the placings. authority was given before the inquiry was held for the payment of dividends. The judges said that in the public interest they viewed this with gravity and considered that officials of racing clubs should exercise greater care when an inquiry might possibly result in the alteration of placings.
