MAN FINED £7 AT TEMUKA
CHILD LEFT IN TRUCK BY PARENTS From Our Own Reporter TEMUKA. November 16. "It is difficult to understand the .mentality of people who leave young children exposed to the possibility of injury in such circumstances,” the Magistrate (Mr E A. Lee) said in the Temuka Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when he imposed a fine of £7 on William O’Neill, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of exposing a girl, aged 15 months, in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering. "Having a family imposes responsibility, and* sacrifices have to be made; most parents are willing to accept them. This is not an unusual thing, and is deserving of the gravest criticism. The fine should be severe to be a deterrent to the defendant and to others,” said the Magistrate.
Constable B. S. Parkes said, that he heard the child crying when he was on patrol on King street on November 6, at 9.20 p.m. A shopkeeper found the child in the cab of a truck, one side of which was open He had difficulty in pacifying the child. The parents were later found at the picture theatre. In evidence. O’Neill said that the child was taken to the picture theatre, but at half-time if was put to sleep in the truck, because it became restless.
