VALUABLE STOCK IMPORTED

MR ALAN GRANT’S RETURN

From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON. October 27. Mr Alan Grant, of Waimate, a breeder of stud Southdowns and Aberdeen Angus cattle, returned to New Zealand to-day in the Timaru Star after a visit to Great Britain. While in Britain he bought three Aberdeen Angus heifers and one Southdown ram, which were brought back in the same ship. One of the heifers is a full sister, to the supreme champion at the 1947 English Royal Show at York. Another comes from the famous Ballindalloch herd in Scotland, and the third is from the Mulben herd, which produced Mulben Embassy, one of the best bulls ever to be imported into New Zealand. The Southdown ram comes from the Mason stud in Oxfordshire. Mr Grant attended to the stock on the way from England and is very satisfied about the condition in which they arrived. Mr Grant had the assistance of another expert, for also travelling in the Timaru Star was Mr Walter Langmead, of Chichester, Sussex, the owner of the famous Ford flock of stud Southdowns. Mr Langmead farms between 2000 and 3000 acres and his flock is the oldest in the Southdown Sheep Society’s flock book. Mr Langmead will stay in New Zealand for several months and will be the guest of Professor E. R. Hudson, of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. He intends to visjt Southdown flocks throughout the country and will spend most of the time in the South Island. He also hopes to visit Massey Agricultural College and to call on Mr George Mumford, of Shannon, to whom he sold the supreme champion Southdown at the English Royal Show in 1947. He will investigate the prospects of settling his four sons in New Zealand.
