SCHOOLS’ MATCH

CRICKET

CHRISTCHURCH PLAYS TIMARU

M. B. POORE SCORES 102 NOT OUT Christchurch Boys' High School finished the first day of its annual-cricket match against Timaru Boys’ High School, at the • Straven road ground yesterday, in a favourable position. Christchurch batted first and scored 180, and shortly before stumps Timaru was all out for 116. The ground was in exceptionally good order and the wicket was perfect. In the circumstances Christchurch’s display was a little disappointing, although Timaru bowled and fielded with commendable zeal. The side made a good start, the captain, M. B. Poore, and Claughton being associated in a profitable second-wicket partnership, but after that it was left to Poore to hold the innings together. He reached a well-deserved century while the last batsman was at the wickets with hum. The Timaru bowling was reasonably accurate throughout the innings, with Nutford’s off-breaks proving effective on a wicxet which did not help him. Bowden Was persistent with his swingers and deserved his success. The wicket-keeper, Miller, gave a very competent display. The Timaru batsmen, against steady bowling, which was rarely dangerous, did not do as well as expected. Jeffrey, the top scorer, gave a determined display, but the others could do little against the outswing bowling of Wilson, who finished with five cheap wickets. Wilson's bowling had plenty of life, but he dropped the ball short of a length repeatedly, and some at least of his success was the result of indiscreet strokes by the batsmen, who in many cases appeared to lack the necessary concentration. Christchurch lost several opportunities through indifferent work behind the wickets.
