RESERVES DEPOT IN PARK

Sir, —Possibly the proposal was intended as the torerunper of a 10 years’ domain planning scheme, providing a Lincoln road fire station’; city abattoirs in the logical positiop opposite the Saleyards; auxiliary M.E.D. on the south side of Riccarton road; morgue, crematorium, and city dump, conveniently adjacent to the Public Hospital; barn for municipal bus services on Harper avenue; and reserve of several acres, overlooking the graceful Avon, for the next South Seas Exhibition. The director of parks and reserves made plain the fact that the council’s proposal is what all feared it was. You referred to Hagley as a specially honoured trust. To the council was given trusteeship of those domains. May councillors never by abuse of that sacred trust bring everlasting shame and dishonour upon themselves and the fair name of Canterbury’s Garden City.—Yours, etc., J. B. NORRIS. October 17, 1948.

Sir, —That a wrong choice has been made for a central depot is quite apparent. We must have a central depot, out not on this lovely site. There’s a better site 200 yards further on—the old horse paddock south of the ennis courts. This area, as long as I .'emember, has been an eyesore, forunately the least seen of all the 450 acres of Hagley. It’s a healthy sign to see we have so many watch dogs, kll sheds should be of pre-fab concrete, bolted together; a big saving in materials. Scores of thousands of pounds have been wasted in the time and expense of staff, cars, and trucks travelling to the extreme boundary of the city to the Linwood nursery. The old horse paddock is like the hub of the city that is to be, after amalgamation. The administration of our reserves is unquestionably 100 per cent, ■’fficient—Yours, etc., OLD GUARD. October 15, 1948.
