CHILDREN TO LINE ROUTE
If the demonstration could not be arranged, the proposal was that all school children should line the route of Their Majesties’ drive to attend the Maori reception on March 17. The route suggested was from the hotel along Oxford terrace to Cashel street, to Manchester street, to Bealey avenue, to Park terrace, and through the Armagh street gates to Hagley Park for the welcome by South Island Maoris, arrangements for which were in the hands of the Maori Association. Bealey avenue and Park terrace were ideal thoroughfares in which to assemble children so that even the tiniest could get a full view of the Royal party, said the Mayor. The assembling of Christchurch school children along Park terrace for the arrival of Field-Marshal Montgomery provided an outstanding reception in New Zealand, and it was evident that a magnificent welcome on a grander scale from all the school children of North Canterbury could be expected. The arrangements were being made by the Canterbury Education Board.
No early afternoon function was proposed for the King, but Her Majesty, it was arranged in the meantime, would attend at the council chamber of the Municipal Chambers to meet representatives of women’s organisations. Her Majesty, said the Mayor, would be welcomed by the Mayoress (Mrs Hardy Cookson) and introduced to the representatives. It appeared that there would not be time for the Queen to have afternoon tea with the gathering as it was planned that she was to join His Majesty at the Botanic Gardens and plant trees there. Tea would probably be served at the gardens. The day would conclude with a,river carnival along Park terrace, and the expectation was that the Royal party. would attend for a short time.
No official functions, except the farewell by himself and the Town Clerk at the Clarendon Hotel, would be held on the morning of Their Majesties’ departure by the King’s Flight from Wigram aerodrome for Napier, said the Mayor.
