GUINEAS WINNER AT HASTINGS

VADOZ PROVES A BARGAIN

Vadoz, the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Guineas last Saturday, has proved a bargain for his owner-trainer, Air J. R.

Meager, of Woodville, who bought him at Trentham as a yearling for 160 guineas. Vadoz was always geing like a winner in front last Saturday, and after working clear at the distance held on to beat Fighting Fox by a length. Vadoz had started twice previously this season and on the second occasion exhibited a failing he showed last year, that of losing ground at the start.

As a two-year-old Vadoz was a game performer and had a busy first season, starting 15 times for three wins, two seconds, three thirds, and two fourth placings. His successes were gained in the Juvenile Handicap at Awapuni last December, when he beat Pitoitoi, the Juvenile Handicap at Pahiatua on January 10, and the Nursery Handicap, of six furlongs, at Trentham on January 22 when carrying 8-11. A particularly good performance on his part was his third placing in the Sapling Stakes at Woodville last February with 9-10, when he finished only a length behind the vanner. Vadoz was bred by Mr A. T. Cooper, of Te Awamutu, and is a bay colt by Vaals • from Kittyora. by Oration (by Ciceroi) from Kitty Barlow, by Nassau from Sweet Alice, by Soult. He is the first foal of Kittyora, which won one small race. Her granddam, Sweet Alice, won nine races, including the Avondale Stakes and the Whangarei Cup. Other winners from the family were Avalanche U 4 wins), Kitty Bellairs (A.R.C. Shorts and Visitors’ Handicap), and Balinavar, a hardy handicapper which raced in the Auckland Province some years ago. His five successes included the A.R.C. President's Handicap and Gordon Handicap, and he was placed on 23 occasions. Vadoz’s next appearance i$ likely to be in the Wellington Guineas, in which he will meet sterner opposition than he met last Saturday, but his chances cannot be discounted. •

Signal Officer Thriving Signal Officer’s connexions did not deem it wise for him to tackle the Grandstand Handicap at Wingatui with 10-13 last Saturday because of the state of the going, but he was given a gallop immediately after the race. Ridden by C. T. Wilson, he was applauded by the crowd as he came down to the winning post. Signal Officer is well forward for his engagements at Trentham. With the benefit of another gallop in public at Washdyke on Saturday, he will be ready to give a good account of himself in the Wellington Handicap on the first day, when he is top height with 10-3. Signal Officer continues to thrive on his work and looks even more robust than he did last season. Pulled a Muscle

E. J. Jennings intended to race Leeston at Masterton on Saturday, but the gelding pulled a muscle and he returned to Riccarton yesterday morning. If he has recovered in time Leeston may be raced at the Motukarara and North Canterbury meetings. The stable apprentice, I. McClure, whQ was successful on Leeston at the Otak* meeting, where he rode three winners, is returning to ride at the Masterton meeting. Gold Nib’s First Winner

When His Nibs defeated the Hastings Stakes winner Joycette in the Juvenile Handicap at Hastings last Saturday, he became the first winner sired by the imported stallion Gold Nib, which stands at the Alton Lodge Stud. His Nibs was handy in the running to the straight, where he soon beat Joycette and went on to win easily. His Nibs was bred by Mr B. G. Rutherford, of Hawarden, and sold at the yearling sales last January for 450 guineas. He now races in the interests of Mrs J. C. Beecher, of Gisborne, where he is trained by C. M. Platt. A thick-set colt, His Nibs is from Twilight, by Nightly from the Australian-bred mare Belcaire. by Treclare from Bhanavar. an imported mare by John o’ Gaunt. Twilight is an unraced sister to two useful gallopers in Patu Po and Patu Ra, and was a half-sister to Clorane, the dam of the good but unsound performer All Night, and the more moderate Joseph Conrad. Gold Nib, the sire of His Nibs, was a much better class performer in England than many of the host of stallions which have come to New Zealand in recent years. He raced in the best company and won twice as a two-year-old, and was five times placed in eight starts. At three years he was placed seven times in 10 starts, including a third to Big Game and Watling Street in the Two Thousand Guineas. At four years he beat Ujiji in the Salisbury Stakes over a mile and a half. Gold Nib is by Dastur (sire of the highly successful sire Dhoti) from Gold Race, by Colorado from Crest Run, by Hurry On. Cresta Run won the Ohe Thousand Guineas and was a halfsister to Foxbridge. Showing Improvement

Courier will have an opportunity to open her winning account in the Spring Stakes at Washdyke on Saturday. She raced greenly when she ran fourth in the second division of the Novice Stakes at Ashburton last month, -but the race improved her and she has been working well since. Courier is a good type ci three-year-old filly by Finis from the imported mare Falcon, which previously left the winners Skyhawk and King's Pride She is trained by F. A. Roberts.for Mi E. E. Steele. Sweet Nymph’s Forward Showing After being last at the half-mile ano covering extra ground, Sweet Nympl finished strongly into third place in the Stewards’ Handicap at Hastings last Saturday, a little over a length behind the winner. Wild Note. Sweet Nymph was the best three-year-old last season, but unfortunately one of her joints gave trouble while she was being prepared for the Great Northern Oaks and St. Leger, and she had to be put aside. In .the interim she has developed into a fine type of mare, and shows no sign of the trouble she had last season. She is engaged in the Wainui Handicap on the first day at Trentham, and with 8-9 may keep her opponents busy. If Sweet Nymph trains on she may have to be reckoned with in the longer weight-for-age events. Good Effort Over Ground

Money Lender was no match for Helio in the Salisbury Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday, but made a good showing for his first attempt beyond a mile. A pleasing feature of his display was that he finished on and kept a straight course to the finish. Money Lender handles bad ground well, and if he strikes similar conditions at Trentham is likely to race prominently. Third Success On End

Champagne registered her third successive win when she scored in the Pukekaraka Handicap at the Otaki Maori meeting last Saturday and will have to race in open company when She has run out her hack nominations. Champagne is a three-year-old chestnut filly by Neptune from the imported mare Celebrity, which showed brilliant speed during her brief and successful racing career in New Zealand. Celebrity is by Nothing Venture from the famous mare Cinna, the dam of Beau Pere, Gay Shield, Mr Standfast, Dink, and Balloch, all successful sires in New Zealand. Champagne is raced by her breeder, Mr J. G. Alexander, who conducts the Cranleigh Stud, and is engaged in the Desert Gold Stakes and the Wellington Guineas at the Wellington meeting this month. She has not raced beyond six furlongs and a half, but she has great brilliance and has won her races easily, so the extra furlong and a half may not prove beyond her. Son of High Caste

High Jip, the winner of the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick last Saturday, is a son of the former champion, High Caste. High Jip's dam is Ghippia by Windbag from Lady Elsie by Rossendale from Cerecia by Malt King from Honeywood. He comes from the same family as Pentheus (Randwick Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, and Doomben Cup), Map (Caulfield Cup). Medalgia (Adelaide Cup), Flavinius (Caulfield Cup), and Old Rowley (Melbourne Cup). The Breeders’ Plate is one of the most important events in Australia to fall to one of High Caste’s progeny, which have achieved fair success. High Caste was an "iron horse” and raced at a time when good horses were more plentiful than at present. He won 35 races and £35,547 in stakes. Two Defections From Team Evening Star, a member of A. B. Stove's team, has gone amiss and will probably be retired to the stud. She is a five-year-old mare by Nightly from Moorbird,- the dam of a good galloper in Moorsotis, which won the Middle Park Plate, and ran second in the N,.Z. Derby before he was sold to India. Stove lost another member of his team last week when a two-year-old gelding by Defaulter from Pleasant Memory died from internal trouble. Totalisator Legalised in Holland After a 37-year ban on betting, Dutch people will again be able to back horses. Under a bill passed by the Dutch Parliament on September 30, betting on the totalisator is legal, but bookmakers are still banned. The ban has lost Holland foreign exchange because people have been making "underground’ 1 bets with bookmakers abroad.
