STRIKE BEGUN IN ROME

CITY WORKERS SEEK HIGHER PAY ESSENTIAL SERVICES AT MINIMUM (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) ROME, Sept. 25. Rome workers began a strike at noon yesterday in protest against the Administration’s refusal to grant pay increases. .Essential services are operating at a minimum, but the strikers have threatened to extend the strike from day to day if their demands are not met. Reuter’s Rome correspondent says that refuse began to pile up in the streets of Rome and the health services were cut after 14,000 municipal workers struck. Births, deaths, and marriages went unregistered. An epidemic of rabies among dogs in the city went unchecked. Skeleton staffs remained on the water supply and fire services. The police removed road blocks surrounding Nicastra and clashed with 1000 farm workers who are striking for better conditions. Four thousand workers at Reggio struck simultaneously to press their claim to hang their leaders’ pictures on messroom walls.
