Thrde members of the Police Force in Christchurch have been promoted: Detective-Sergeant J. J. Halcrow to senior-detective. Detective A. B. Tate to detective-sergeant, and Constable A. Scally to sergeant. Constable C. L. Scanlon, of Cobden, has been promoted to sergeant.
The following nominations have been received by the returning officer for the delegate to represent the New Zealand Federation of Labour at the world federation of trade unions conference at Brussels in December:— Messrs James Anderson. K. McL. Baxter, A. H. Dixon, E. J. H’arvie. and R. Stanley. The ballot will probably close about the middle of October.— (P.A.)
In recognition of his 34 years’ service to the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Mr H. A. Toneycliffe, superintendent and transport officer for the South Canterbury district until his resignation in April, was presented with a coffee percolator by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A- E. S. Hanan), on behalf of adult and cadet members of the brigade, last week. Mrs Toneycliffe was invested with the insignia of a serving sister of the Order by the officer in charge of the South Canterbury sub-district of the St. John Ambulance (Mr W. D. Rogers), on behalf of the commissioner, in recognition of 20 years of service. Mr Hanan was presented with, a certificate of life membership, as he had been instrumental in raising £lOOO for a new ambulance.
