DUNEDIN CLUB

GRAEME’S OVERDUE SUCCESS

RICCARTON HORSES WIN FOUR RACES From Our Own Reporter < DUNEDIN, September 26. The Riocarton-trained Graeme gained a long overdue win when he finished splendidly and caughti Banshee in the last stride for a half-head decision in the Ranfurly Handicap, the principal event on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Wingatui yesterday. Riccarton-trained horses won four races during the day. and three of them wereridden by C. McDonald. In spite of the counter-attraction of the Ranfurly Shield match, there was a good attendance at the meeting, which was held in fine, sunny weather. ' However, there was a noticeable exodus frjom the course after the sixth race. The totalisator handled £51,625, compared with £48,928 10s last year. After she had taken the lead with five furlongs to run, Banshee looked an easy winner beginning the last furlong in the Ranfurly Handicap, but Graeme finished brilliantly under a hard ride to gain his first success in open company. Robert, Brockie, and Salmon Spear were the early leaders, but entering the back straight Salmon Spear pulled his way to the front and led from Robert and Hansel, with Brockie and Graeme next, closely followed by Duvaals and Tweedside, three lengths clear of Banshee, the same distance ahead of Royal Sal and Aganev. At the six furlongs Hansel headed Salmon Spear, and at the five furlongs Banshee had moved up from the rear to join Hansel. These two led round to the straight from Salmon Spear, Graeme, Royal Sal, and Brockie. As soon as they straightened up Banshee shot clear of Hansel, but she had nothing in reserve when Graeme loomed up on the outer with 50 yards to flm, and the latter won in the last stride in a desperate finish. Four lengths back Brockie came on to gain third place, with another three lengths to Aganev. Then came Tweedside, Salmon Spear, and Royal Sal, almost in line.

Excellency Beats Sprinters Excellency marked her first appearance for the season with a narrow but stylish win in the Telegraph Handicap. After racing in behind the leaders she came through inside the final furlong to win by a neck from Sterling Lad, Deep Harmony, and Connaught, which finished in line. Golden Amber was a little slow away. Stagestruck leading out from Deep Harmony, Connaught, and Sterling Lad, with Trident and Excellency in behind them, clear of Wantwood and Musselman. Excellency improved her position at the end of two furlongs and at the three furlongs Stagestruck was just clear of Connaught and Sterling Lad, Mtith Excellency and Deep Harmony following closely. Connaught headed off Stagestruck on the home turn and just led him into the straight from Sterling Lad and Excellency, with Deep Harmony just behind them. Commencing the final furlong Connaught was being hotly pressed by Sterling Lad and Excellency, and the latter took charge with half a furlong to run and won narrowly but well by a neck from Sterling Lad, with a similar margin to Deep Harmony, which got up on the inside in the laSt stride to beat Connaught by a head for third. Golden Amber and Trident were another length and a half back, and then came Musselman, Frances, Wantwood, and Stagestruck. More than half the field lost their chance at the start in the McLean Stakes. The winner, Roygbiv, drew No. 1 position at the* barrier. After dwelling very slightly at the start, he bounded away to take the lead at the end of a furlong and last long, enough to hold ’off the faster-finishing Goldstrike. The Riccar-ton-trained Agnes Pearl came from the middle of the field to get third, with Robinfaye fourth. Bosun, Neptina, Lady Moyra, and Robinfaye were all slow at the start, and Boost was badly checked in the first few strides. Roygbiv fared best in the early scramble for positions and led to the straight from Goldstrike, Snice, Flying Trixie, and Winning Gem, with Agnes Pearl, Gold King, and Robinfaye coming into the picture early in the run home. Roygbiv held on to his lead until nearing the post, when Goldstrike finished on to get within half a length of him. Agnes Pearl, which made up a good deal of ground in the straight, was third another two lengths away, with about half a length to Robinfaye in fourth place. Then Came Gold King, Lilting, Caronia, Winning Gem, and Spice. The winner is a small chestnut gelding by Sir Gallowav from Tracsono, a Tractor mare not in the Stud Boqk- He is owned by Mr B. S. Irwin, a steward of the club and the president of the Otago Hunt Club. Results:— SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £400; one mile and three-quarters 5. 3—SPHERE 10-13 D. Dawson 1 4. 6—Glad Fox 11-0 .. K.
