AGRICULTURAL WORK IN SCHOOLS
KEEN INTEREST LAST SEASON Increasing interest is being taken in school home garden and stock projects in the Canterbury Education Board’s district. Entries in various classes during the season were a record and a total of 5300 were received, of which the majority were for home vegetable and flower gardens. Stock projects covered the rearing of calves, lambs, chickens, and pigs. The Spencer Pennant, awarded annually to the leading school in agricultural club activities between the Rakaia and Clarence rivers, was won this year by the Duvauchelle Bay and Swannanoa Schools. The judges said after their inspections that it had been difficult to separate the schools because of the standard of the exhibits. In rural schools outstanding work was done by the following schools which will receive certificates:— Rural schools: Waikari. Broadfields. West Eyreton, Ohoka, West Melton, East Eyreton, Little Akaloa. Halswell, Port Levy. Glenroy, Broomfield. Hororata, Scargill. Clarkville, Rotherham, Burnham. Woodend, Ladbrooks, Courtenay. Leeston. Sedgemere, Maungamaumu, Glentunnel, Springston. Marshland, Greenpark, and Harewood. District high schools: Lincoln, Oxford. Hawarden, and Cheviot. Town schools: Riccarton, Woolston, and Cheviot. The following schools showed cmmendable interest in agricultural club activities:—Cashmere. St. Albans, Wharenui, Papanui, Shirley. Spreydon, Somerfield, Richmond. Kaiapoi. Waipara. Tai Tapu, Kaikoura Suburban, Fernside. Loburn North. Birdling’s Flat, Little River, Okuti Valley, Puaha. and Halkett-
