SOLENT FLYING BOATS

“BEST BRITISH AIRCRAFT AVAILABLE ” (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 25. The Solent flying-boats on order for Tasman Empire Airways are not stopgaps, according to the supply officer for the airways company (Mr F. A. Reeves) who recently returned from inspecting the aircraft at the Short Brothers factory in England. “Solents are the best aircraft for the run at present available on the British market,” said Mr Reeves. “It would only be true to call them stopgaps insofar that all machines are stopgaps these days with the present rate of progress in aviation.” When the machines were early next year they would be the most advanced aeroplanes in the flying-boat field. “All the costings show that the Solent is an economically sound proposition, more so than any of the available landplanes,” added Mr Reeves. “I came away with the impression that we are getting something really good.”
