MAIN HIGHWAYS FINANCE

OPERATION OF NEW LEGISLATION

The new system of finance for the Main Highways Board had resulted in a sum equal to 9d a gallon of revenue derived from petrol being applied to the highways in the last year, Mr M. H. Wynyard, motorists’ representative on the board, reported to the South Island Motor Union conference yesterday. This was an improvement on the allocation that would have been available from the Main Highways Account.

When the amending legislation was passed, no guaranteed minimum fixed on the basis of the old system was included: but after a conference with the Parliamentary law draughtsman a clause for the coming finance bill had been composed. This should safeguard the position. The conference unanimously endorsed the policy of Mr Wynyard, and expressed satisfaction with the result of the first year under the new financial scheme.
