CANTERBURY’S APPEAL TO ASSOCIATION From Our Own Reporter
WELLINGTON. September 24. Canterbury’s appeal against the allocation of the 1950 Empire Games will be decided definitely next Monday evening. The decision will be made at the half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association. The chairman of the association’s council. Mr A. D. Bayfeild, who presided at the meeting in Wellington lecently when the games were allocated to Auckland, said to-day that he did not know what procedure would be adopted in the hearing of the apf»eal. “The association has received a etter from Christchurch in which an appeal is made against the council’s decision, and this will be discussed at the meeting,” said Mr Bayfeild. “However. I have no idea what line will be , adopted. The application is among, various items on our agenda paper and - will be considered by the meeting.” PROTEST MADE BY FOUNDERS’ SOCIETY A protest against the decision of the council of the New. Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association in allotting the Empire Games in 1950 to Auckland has been made by the New Zealand Founders’ Society. “The selection of Auckland instead of Christchurch shows a failure to appreciate the unique importance of the Canterbury centennial, not only from the point of view of the nation, but also from the Commonwealth,” states the resolution, a copy of which has been sent to the association. The society felt that the venue of the Games should be decided on a national basis because of the significance of the Canterbury centennial.
