AUSTRALIAN PETROL RATIONS
SYDNEY, September 21. Australia used 395,000,000 gallons of petrol in 1947, about 35,000,000 gallons more than in 1939, said the Federal Minister of Shipping and Fuel (Senator W. P. Ashley) in announcing details of reduced petrol and other fuel rations to operate from October 1. It was necessary for all countries in the sterling area to conserve dollars, he said. Primary producers would receive a special ration for seasonal needs and the carrying of produce. Private motorists would' be able to average 1895 miles a year on the new ration, which amounted to a 20. per cent, cut for private motorists and 10 per cent, for most other consumers.
