N.Z. DELEGATION TO UNITED NATIONS
CHOICE OF MRS NEWLANDS QUESTIONED
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. September 21. Reference to the choice of the Labour candidate for Ashburton at the last General Election (Mrs M. A. Newlands) as one of the New Zealand delegation to attend the General Assembly of the United Nations was made by Mr A. J. Murdoch (Opposition, Marsden), in the House of Representatives to-day. “While it is necessary for the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) to attend this conference, why should a Labour candidate for Timaru—an
unsuccessful Labour candidate—also attend unless it is merely another case of spoils to the losers?” asked Mr Murdoch.
The Minister of Health (Miss M. B. Howard): “What sort of an outfit would we be if we did not send our own representatives.”
If in the far distant future the Opposition became the Government it would also send its own representatives to such conferences, said Miss Howard. She saiab Mrs Newlands had a good record in ’ civic affairs. She hoped that in future women would be sent to all overseas conferences.
