TWO-YEAR-OLDS SPRINTED

CANDIDATES FOR MCLEAN

STAKES IMPRESS Thirty-one horses from Riccarton stables are engaged on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Wingatui on Saturday, and in addition the Invercargill trainer, R. E. McLellan, who has been quartered at Riccartpn for more than two' months, has «ve members of his team engaged. The majority of the older horses raced at Ashburton on Saturday and the principal interest in the track work at Riccarton yesterday morning was in the eight McLean Stakes candidates, several of which were galloped on the course proper. The most forward of these appear to be Boost, Bosun, Robinfaye, ana Caronia.

Bosun, a brown gelding by Beau Repaire from Vapos, and a brother to Beaunghter and Beaute, ran away from the Neptune—Sweet Abbess filly Neptina in a sprint down the straight (approximately three furlongs), in 34 4-ssec. Bosun is a smart beginner and a good, free goer. Over the same distance, Robinfaye beat Caronia by two lengths, with six lengths to Hobgoblin, in 34 l-ssec. Robinfaye is a black filly by Robin Goodfellow from Condole, trained by G. Ridgway, and went well in a run from the starting stalls last She is a sensible type and likely to raft well on Saturday. Caronia (Nightmarch—Mauietania) is a half-sister to Top Deck, and may prove as smart as her relative.

Boost Sprints Well Boost, a typical Royal Chief colt from ’he Nightmarch mare. Real Amber, and trained by J. S. Shaw, accompanied Beaumaris (Beau Repaire—Mabel Rose gelding) in a sprint over four furlongs in 49 2-ssec. Boost has drawn the best barrier position of the Riccarton youngsters, and will have a decided advantage if he begins well. Swayup, a well developed bay gelding by Sir Galloway from Petacci, sprinted three furlongs on the No. 8 grass with Deep Harmony in 39 l-ssec, and finished half a length behind his older companion. Agnes Pearl (Sir Galloway—Traction filly) and Dinah San (Kincardine—Dinah Dhu filly) also sprinted down the straight. Both are trained by G. S. Barr. Dinah San will not race at Wingatui. The remaining McLean Stakes candidate, Lady Moyra, was not galloped. She is by Chatsworth from Raewin, and is trained by A. S. Ellis. -Lady Moyra was well up at the end of three furlongs in her division in a run from the starting stalls at the five furlongs on the course proper last week. Trinidad, one of the most attractive of the Riccarton youngsters, sprinted over four furlongs in 49 3-ssec, the last three m 34 4-ssec. He is a bay colt by Dexru,.t?r from Calypso, a half-sister to Nightbeam, and is one of J. S. Shaw’s team. He is not engaged at Wingatui on Saturday.

Musselman Recovering Though he was a little stiff when exercised yesterday morning, F. D. Jones expects that Musselman will be fit to race on Saturday. Turf Topic is the only other doubtful starter among the Dunedin candidates. He has been sore from the effects of a bruised foot.

Bruce does not appear to have suffered any. serious injuries after his escapades in the float last Saturday and showed no signs of soreness when trotted round in of the course. Mefetiza was lame in her off foreleg after racing at Ashburton last Saturday and the extent of her trouble will not be known for a few days. Thornbridge was not accepted for at Dunedin as one of his joints had filled and he has been eased up.
