MAGISTRATE’S COURT
TUESDAY (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.) T REMANDED Lauriston Scott Neilson, a seaman, aged 21 (Mr E. M. Hay), was remanded until September 28, on a charge of failing to report while released on probation. Bail was allowed at £5O in accused’s own recognisance and one surety of £lOO, conditional on his reporting to the police daily. SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT David Jamieson, a labourer, aged 29, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient means of support. Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty, who prosecuted, said that Jamieson had worked in coal mines on the West Coast, but seemed to spend most of his time following racemeetings. Accused had borrowed money and had attempted to leave an hotel by a fire-escape without repaying his debts. "I rather think that probation would be wasted on you,” said the Magistrate, imposing a sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. TRAFFIC CASES Offenders against the traffic regulations were dealt with as follows, all except two of the cases being brought by the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council:—

JUDGMENT FOR PLAINTIFF Bert Arthur Allen, of Christchurch, fruiterer, was awarded £4l ss, against Harold Counsell, of Wellington, car dealer, the amount representing damage done to plaintiff’s motor-car in a collision on November 14, 1947, at Christchurch.

JUDGMENT SUMMONS M. Eathorne was ordered to pay Gordon and Gotch (Australasia),. Ltd., the sum of £l7 18s forthwith, in default 19 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as defendant pays £2 a month, first payment on October 21.
