STATE HOUSING BLOCK

SEWERAGE FOR AREA IN SHIRLEY

The estimated cost cf providing sewerage services for 434 houses to be built by the Housing Department in Emmett’s block. Shirley, is £22,780. including £4OOO for a pumping station. This was reported to the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening The board had agreed to a proposal that the department should be allowed to build the necessary main, sewer, pumping station, and rising main to discharge to the existing siphon under the river at Dallington, connected to the Wainoni pumping station. Financial details will be discussed by the board and the department, and the board last evening adopted a report by its finance committee recommending that the department should be required to find the whole of the capital cost of the work, and that the board should refund the cost when development warranted major -sewer extensions in areas outside the State housing block.

In computing the amount, to be refunded. it was recommended that allowance should be made for the £2576 the department had agreed to contribute to the cost of the pumping station in Marshland road. The board should reserve the right to allow connexions to the proposed sewer or pumping station, and should operate and maintain the whole service.
