BAN ON POLISH AND BALT MIGRANTS
DECISION OF AUSTRALIAN MINERS’ FEDERATION (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 1. The national convention of the Australian Miners’ Federation to-day passed a resolution banning Polish and Balt migrants from coal or shale mines. The first effect of the decision is to prevent 51 Polish former servicemen of General Anders’force from working in the Glen Davis shale mine in New South Wales. The resolution contended that there was already labour available for manning the mines, provided the mines were made healthier, safer, and more congenial, and economic security was granted. The federation said that it did not oppose the entrance into the industry of Poles and Balts on any ground of race, nationality, or colour, but that it was opposed to any plan for mass Government-assisted migration gf national groups known to have an outlook and training foreign to the democratic ideals of the Australian working-class movement.
