ENGAGEMENT
Mr and Mrs S. J. Geary, St. Albans, have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their twin daughter, Paula Exton, to Paul Boyle Newell, son of the late Mr and Mrs W. Newell, Waimate.
Yvonne Patterson, a grand-niece of Dame Nellie Melba, as star ballerina of the de Cuevas Ballet, recently danced for a season with her company at Covent Garden, where her famous grand-aunt sang. Yvonne Patterson was born in Melbourne, Australia. and educated in America. She has danced in the United States. Europe, and Africa, and the only continent she has yet is Asia. In her ballet company are Russians. Argentinians, French, Jugoslavs, Swiss, Poles, American Indians, and Americans. Her father, Ambrose Patterson, an artist, is director of the art department of Washington University. Seattle. Yvonne Patterson is a pianist as well as a dancer, and also paints in her spare time. She has the smallest waist in her company—only 21 inches —and in her nylon fishnet stocking trunks stands sft 6in high. Her hip measurement is 34 inches. That the Victoria League was not purely a women’s organisation was shown at the Dominion conference of the league this week when it was suggested that branches might be strengthened by the formation of advisory committees of men. At the Founders’ Ball, held in Wellington last week, one of the frocks worn had originally belonged to Mrs A. Otterson. who was a daughter of the late Mr George Gould of “Hambleden,” Christchurch, and sister of the late Mr George Gould of “Avonbank,” Fendalton. She died in London early in 1937 at the age of 79 yean.
