PROFIT OF £llO LAST YEAR A total of £9380 was paid in stakes and the totalisator handled £127,561, a slight decrease on the previous year’s figure, said the chairman (Mr R. J. Mulligan). in his report to the annual meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club After making provision for taxation and allowing for depreciation (£313 19s 4d). the net profit for the year was £llO 12s Id. Government taxes paid amounted to £12,192 2s 6d. “This club is dependent to a large extent on support from the outside public, and unless we have fine weather in Christchurch and other distant places our turnover on th*e totalisator is very much affected,” he said. "Unfortunately, on several of our race days during the last year the weather was far from good in outside areas, with the result that profit suffered considerably. We are still in a very unfortunate position as to our stand accommodation, as we cannot give the pleasure to our members and visitors that we would wish. I think we should again approach the Government for a permit to rebuild the stand. If we could get our building programme carried out es we wish, we would have a course second only to the very large centres of New Zealand, ’ Mr Mulligan said. Membership stood at 170, compared with 119 in 1945. Officers elected were:—president, Mr H. F. Nlcoll; vice-president. Mr J. H. Grigg; treasurer, Mr R. Kennedy; chairman, Mr Mulligan; committee. The balance-sheet showed, that the club had an excess of assets over liabilities totalling £9526, including £9028 in Government stock, post office, national savings, bank balarce, and local body debentures.
