BOARD OF 13 MEMBERS PROPOSED PROVISION FOR FIVE PARENTS A Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Board of 13 members is proposed in the draft bill now in preparation for submission to Parliament. The Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) said yesterday that he had submitted proposals to the interested parties for their comment, and he could give no other details of the proposed constitution until these had been considered. The membership at present proposed is three appointed by the Canterbury Education Board, two by the Governor-' General (one at least to be a woman), one by parents of pupils attending the Christchurch Girls’ High School, the Avonside Girls’ High School, the Christchurch West High School, the Papanui Technical College, and the Christchurch Boys’ High School, one by the Christchurch City Council, one by employers in Christchurch industries, ana one by employees. The Canterbury University College Council asked this week that it should have two representatives on the council and that two teachers’ representatives should also be included. During discussion by the Christchurch Technical Colleges’ Board of Governors it was also suggested that a professional educationist should have a seat on the board. The date mentioned for the change is February 1, 1949. Mr McCombs declined to say whether this was a flrm decision. The bill would be submitted to Parliament “when it was ready.” Certain administrative changes would have to be arranged, Mr McCombs added. Assets and records of the schools concerned, at present in the ha’nds of the Canterbury College Council and the Technical Colleges’ Board, would have to be transferred and certain staff might be transferred to the employ of the new board.
