SMALL FIRE IN SCHOOL FOR DEAF

NO DAMAGE DONE Pupils in the main building of the School for Deaf, Wakefield avenue, Sumner, -were quickly evacuated when smoke began to pour into a class room from beneath the floor about noon yesterday. The outbreak was soon put out by the Christchurch Fire Brigade, and no damage was done. It is believed that the outbreak was caused by a child dropping a lighted match down a vent on to a piece of rag. Slight damage was done to the wiring of a motor-car owned by Mr Thomas Wesley Polson, at 172 Cashel street, about 8.57 a.m. yesterday. The brigade used first-aid equipment on the outbreak. At 11.48 a.m. a call was received to a rubbish fire at the back of the Excelsior Hotel, 120 Manchester street.
