HARBOUR BOARD MEMBERSHIP
EXEMPTION FROM BILL IN SIX CASES (P.A.) WELLINGTON. August 25. The schedule to the Harbours Amendment Bill fixing the number of additional members to be appointed to harbour boards to represent workers in the waterfront industry has been amended by the Local Bills Committee of the House of Representatives to exclude six of the smaller boards from having such representation. The schedule as originally drafted provided for the Bay of Islands, Hokitika, Motueka, Tolaga Bay, Wairau, and Whakatane Harbour Boards each to have one member to represent workers in the waterfront industry but they have been deleted in the amended bill. When the House received the report to-day Mr S. W. Smith (Opposition, Hobson) said that in the committee there was a division of opinion about the bill and voting had been strictly in accord with party lines. The Opposition called for a division on the motion to table the report of the committee. The motion was agreed to by 35 votes to 31. UNQUALIFIED DENTISTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 25. Her attention had been drawn to a report that some dental mechanics were undertaking chairside dental procedures “with the result that the public is being preyed upon by a few quacks and charlatans.” said the Minister of Health (Miss M. B. Howard) in a written reply to Mr C. M. Bowd?n (Opposition. Karori) in the House of Representatives to-day. She was having the matter investigated and, if the allegation of illegal practice was correct. the necessary action would be taken to ensure that the public was adequately protected from the activities of unqualified persons.
