COMBINED ORPHANAGE APPEAL
L RECORD SUM COLLECTED The annual appeal conducted by the combined Methodist, Anglican, and Presbyterian orphanages of Christchurch has resulted in donations totalling £5656. the largest figure recorded since the appeal began Of this total the street appeal held yesterday contributed £946, and the broadcast concert, hOuse-to-house collection, and special donations contributed £4710, of which Ashburton provided £360 and Rangiora £lOO. “It is easily the best yet recorded, although the street day figures were slightly less than last year, because of the shortage of collectors,” said the chairman of the Combined Orphanage Citizens’ Committee (Mr J. L. Hay) last evening. "There has been a wonderful response from the public, and we would like to thank particularly the members of the Baptist. Congregational, and Church of Christ churches, who gave every assistance, although they do not benefit directly from the appeal.”
