RETIREMENT OF JOE LOUIS
RIGHT RESERVED TO RECLAIM TITLE NEW YORK, August 22. Joe Louis said he would officially retire from boxing this week, but he would retain the right to reclaim the title within six months. Louis insisted that he was definitely finished with boxing, but said that his formal retirement notice to Mike Jacobs and the Twentieth Century Sporting Club in New York would contain a clause that would enable him to reclaim and defend the title within six months.
A Twentieth Century Sporting Club spokesman refused to comment on Louis’s statement. Boxing circles, however, interpret his seemingly ambiguous statement as a fair indication that he will fight again.
