BREEDING INDUSTRY MAY SUFFER

AUSTRALIAN OWNER’S VIEW OF EXCHANGE RATE (P^-) , .. AUCKLAND, August 23. Maunce McCarten, formerly one of the Dominions leading jockeys, is fast becoming Australia's foremost trainer, according to Mr H. E. Tancred, the vicechairman of the Sydney Turf Club, who arrived in the Aorangj to-day to look over a few horses. “Maurice has the biggest training stables in the country—but he is very loyal to New Zealand horses," he added. Mr Tancred said that the return of the New Zealand £ to par with sterling was likely to have serious repercussions in her racehorse breeding industry. “New Zealand horses were dear enough before, but to increase the price suddenly by 25 per cent, is to put them beyond reach,” he added. “There won’t be many inquiries."
