AUSTRALIA 293 FOR FOUR
MATCH WITH KENT ANOTHER CENTURY TO BROWN (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Augutl 21. Subdued by accurate but not hostile bowling, the Australians made a modest 293 for four wickets in five hours and a half in their match against Kent at Canterbury. Bradman won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket made moist by a slight drizzle. Rain stopped play for the day at 5.30 p.m. Harvey, who was clean bowled at 60, maintained his natural aggressiveness throughout his innings, and pleased the spectators, who were not enthusiastic over Brown’s precise, chanceless but very slow 106. Harvey scored rapidly with well timed shots each side of the wicket. He hit eight boundaries. Bradman played himself in slowly, but also played a sparkling innings when he had settled down. He seemed assured of a century, but skied a ball to Valentine at mid-off. Morris was caught behind the wicket when he went well down the pitch to drive a ball from the slow off-break bowler, Dovey, after a sprightly 43. The aggressive spirit of his three partners emphasised Brown’s negative batting. He was at the wicket for 252 minutes before he attempted one of his rare drives and snicked an out-swinger from Ridgeway to Evans. Scores were:— AUSTRALIA First Innings \ Brown, c Evans, b Ridgeway .. * 108 Morris, c Evans, b Dovey ..43 Bradman, c Valentine, b Crush .. 85 Harvey, b Ridgeway .. ..00 Loxton, not out .. .. ..15 Hamence, not out .. .. .. 1 Extras .. .. .. 3 Total for four wickets .. 203 Bowling: Ridgeway, two for 101; Crush, one for 70; Todd, none for 29; Dovey, one for 74: Davies, none for 16.
