GUN FIGHT WITH TERRORISTS

COMBINED OPERATIONS IN MALAYA

(Rec. 11 p.m.) SINGAPORE, Aug. 21. Seven terrorists were killed and three others were captured in a gun battle to-day with 400 British soldiers and police in the forest 10 miles west of Kuala Lumpur. One British soldier was killed and another wounded. The action was broken off after half an hour by the terrorists, who plunged deeper into the jungle. The battle began when a combined British force took the terrorists by surprise in their jungle headquarters. The terrorists fought from foxholes like those used by the Japanese during the war.

Police shot dead two insurgents in a gun battle when 25 armed Chinese attacked the Wan Lee mine police post, near the village of Kanthan, 15 miles north of Ipoh.

A party of Gurkhas yesterday killed a Chinese terrorist, and a British officer was wounded in a clash near a rubber estate near Kuali, in Central Johore.

The 4th Queen’s Own Hussars have sailed from Southampton for Singapore in the troopship Dilwara. They are the first reinforcements to be posted from Britain to Malaya. Their strength is 35 officers and 815 other ranks. They include 36 Poles.

The British Communist Party has issued a statement calling on all sections of the labour movement to demand an immediate end to the “barbarous colonial war” in Malaya and asking British workers to refuse to handle munitions or to transport troops for Malaya.
