MRS KASENKINA BETTER
REFUSAL TO SEE RUSSIANS -
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 21. Mrs Kasenkina. the Soviet schoolteacher, was removed from the critically ill list in the Roosevelt Hospital to-day, nine days after she leaped from the third floor of the Soviet Consulate in New York. A hospital bulletin said she was constantly improving. Meanwhile, Dr. Grant Pennoyer, who is attending Mrs Kasenkina, notified the Soviet Consul-General (Mr Jacob Lomakin) that she still did not wish to see any Russian official. Dr. Pennoyer’s notification in effect withdrew his earlier invitation to Mr Lomakin to send his own physician for consultation to assure himself that Mrs Kasenkina was receiving proper medical attention.
Mr Justice Samuel Dickstein. of the New York State Supreme Court, yesterday dismissed the proceedings under a writ of habeas corpus directing Mr Ldmakin to produce Mrs Kasenkina in Court. He explained that the issue of the warrant would now serve no useful purpose.
