NEW HORSES IN DONALD’S STABLE

Beverley Volo and Who Knows, which have both won races at the trotting gait, are recent additions to C. S. Donald’s team at Belfast. An aged mare, Beverley Volo, which will race in the interests of Messrs A. Todd and G. Thompson in the Intermediate Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s National meeting at Addington on Saturday, was paraded in the 3min 47sec class trot at the trials at Addington on Thursday, but no line could be gained on her prospects as she was always well back after failing to go away correctly. By Lusty Volo from the Native King mare Beverley King, which took a record of 2min 49 l-ssec at the pacing gait. Beverley Volo gained two wins and a second in her first five races as a five-year-old in the 1946-47 season, but she subsequently lost form, her 18 starts since then yielding only two minor placings. Who Knows, the winner of two races in the 1946-47 season, showed his best form in his two starts last season when he finished second to Swanee River in the Kaitoke Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on February 28. An aged gelding by Quite Sure, Who Knows is out of Jenny Bell Jnr., a Four Chimes mare which left other winners in Special Sun to Sungod, Silver Guy to Adioo Guy, and Regal to Grattan Loyal. Pat Review showed some speed to finish fourth after breaking at the start of the 3min 57sec class trot at the trials at Addington on Thursday. A son of Josedale Dictator and Peggotty. Pat Review may race well in the Addington Trotting Stakes at the National meeting. Once she settled down to pace, Doris Potts showed a lot of ability to finish second to Royal Volo in the third division of the 2min 59sec class pace at Addington on Thursday. A filly, Doris Potts, which is trained by N. S. G. Watson, is by Jack Potts from Doris Nelson. Princess Grattan, which is trained at New Brighton by L. C. Frost, is by Gattan Loyal from Afterglow, by Native King from Wild Child, the dam of a large family of winners. From a Winning Family

Highland Belle created a good impression when she won the fourth division of the 2min 59sec pace by a head from Castlelight in 2min 54sec at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association meeting at Addington on Thursday. Castlelight took the leed at the of two furlongs, but he lost his position when he went to a break with six furlongs to go. Once he was properly balanced, he showed a lot of speed to finish a head behind Highland Belle. Highland Belle, which Is a four-year-old mare by U Scott from Tondeleyo, is owned by Mr W. F. Woolley (Lyttelton), who also has a three-year-old brother to her in work in L. O. Thomas’s team at Addington. By Wrack. Tondeleyo. which is the dam of other winners in Margaret Hall and Loyal Guest, is out of the imported Estella Amos, the dam of winners in Indianapolis. Imperial Jade,' and Ganton. •

Early Foal Mr E. E. Edmonds’s Eyenew has foaled a black pacing colt to Pacing Power and she is to be mated with the same horse this season. A half-sister by New Derby to a good performer in Volo Senwod, Eyenew Is out of Wink Eye, by Rey de Oro from Kathie Pointer, by Ixigan Pointer from Ma Cushla, by Nelson Bingen from Ma Belle, by Abbey Bells. M. Holmes, who trains his team at Russley, is represented by a strong bracket in Johnnie Lawn and Free Fight in the August Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday. An aged horse by Lawn Derby from Chiming Rose. Johnnie Lawn, which gained two wins and four minor pl&cings last season gave a.good display from the 12 yards mark when he finished fourth to Baby Grand, Right Royal, and Commander Scott in the 3mln 36sec class pace at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association trials at Addington on Thursday. One of the best four-year-olds seen out last season, Free Fight, which gained four wins and three second placings in his last seven starts, appeals as a potential New Zealand Cup Handicap winner. Free Fight is nicely placed on the 12 yards mark in the August Handicap, and this race may prove a stepping-stone to much better company for him. May Return to Form

Cameronian is now being trained at Addington by L. G. Tisch, who also has Tudor Minstrel in his care. Driven by F. G. Holmes, who trained him to, gain two minor placings in his three starts last season, Cameronian looked well when he was paraded in the 3min 36see Class pace at the trials at Addington on Thursday. in Addington Trotting Stakes

The Oamaru trainer, S. A. Easton, has the four-year-old gelding, Super Sarin, engaged in the Addington Trotting Stakes on the second day of the National meetinf at Addington. By U Scott. R. A. McKenzie’s team at Papanul includes a promising two-year-old filly by Gold, Bar from Queen High, Which left Ingot (the winner of the Woodend Sapling Stakes in Australia) to the same site. By Jack Potts, Queen High is out of a winner in Pleasant Wave, by Wflverley from the King Cole mare Pleasant Drive, which left a large family of winners when at the stud in Southland. Out of Marie Louise . Gold Silk, which is engaged in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, is trained at Yaldhurst by A. Holmes for Mr R. H. Kennedy. By Gold Bar. Gold Silk is out of Marie Louise, which left winners in French Gold and Gold Nip to the flame sire. ” Racing at Addington Once he was able to get a clear run, Silverlight revealed his best, form to finish second to Super Globe in the 3min 41sec class pace at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders' Association trials at Addington on Thursday. A likely improver from R. H. Butterick’s stable at Rakaia, Silverlight should be prominent all the way in the Islington Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington this week.
