OPEN TOURNAMENT AT AVONDALE J. W. JACKSON WINS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP An open championship tournament, played ir. two sections, was commenced on the Avondale Club’s links on Saturday when the junior division was played. Yesterday the intermediate and senior divisions were played and a cold easterly wind made good scoring difficult. In the conditions J. W. Jackson's two rounds, each of 74, represented excellent golf. In the junior grade G. Pitcaithly (168) won from C. E. Barrett on the countback. Other scores were: W. R. Thrower 171; P. I. Riseley, L. McMenamin 172. The best gross score in one rouQd was returned, by W. R. Thrower (80). The morning stroke handicap resulted: S. H. Burt 86, 21—65: C. E. Barrett 82, 16 —66; T. I. Riseley 85, 18—67; A. Croy 91, 24—67. The afternoon stroke handicap resulted: W. R. Thrower 80, 16—64; F. Hurdley 83, 18—65; G. F. Branthwaite 83, 16—67; A. R. Oakley 85, 18—67. Smith, with a score of 29. AUCKLAND BEATS WELLINGTON HORNE LOSES TO GLADING (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 22. The Auckland men’s golf team scored a decisive win over Wellington by 14 games to 4 in a match played at Titirangi during the week-end. Auckland won all six of the foursomes matches played on Saturday afternoon, and eight ’t>f the singles games, which were restricted to 18 holes on Sunday morning because of steady rain and a cold wind. The outstanding feature of the match was the convincing win of the national open champion, R. H. Glading, of Auckland, over W. G. Home, his conqueror in the 1947 amateur championship. Glading played almost flawless golf in atrocious conditions to beat Horne, 7 and 5, and was 10 up at the end of the 18 holes. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB A greensome bogey handicap played by the Christchurch Golf Club on Saturday resulted in a tie between A. B. Anderson and M. W. Simes 3 up and A. G. Paterson and N. Boon, 3 up. Other scores were: R. Champtaloup and C. L. Sturge, 2 up; A. A. Holland and P. H. N. Freeth, 2 up; J. L. Blair and W. G. ScanneH, 1 up. The final of the second flight of the Borthwick vase resulted in G. W. Denton beating T. S. McMillan, 4 and 2. HAGLEY CLUB The second rounds of the Hagley Club championships were played on Saturday.
