RIVAL CLAIMS IN ANTARCTIC

REPORTED AMERICAN PROPOSAL “NOT ACCEPTABLE TO CHILE ” (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) NEW YORK. Aug. 4. The United States’ proposal that an eight-nation trusteeship group settle conflicting claims to South Polar territory is not acceptable to Chile,” says the Santiago correspondent of the United Press. “Sources close to the Chilean Foreign Office said that Mr Edward Green, an official of the United States State Department, made the proposal during a recent visit to Chile and Argentina. “While expressing the hope that Chile and Britain would amicably settle their dispute in the Antarctic, these sources said that Chile was not prepared to participate in international negotiations on the subject and would not deal with any other Power but Argentina.” Diplomatic sources in Buenos Aires say that Mr Green suggested a joint administration of the South Polar region by the United States, Britain, Argentina, Chile, Norway, Finland. Australia and New Zealand.
