MISSING FRENCH FLYING-BOAT
PLANE AND SHIP REPORT SOS SIGNALS
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 4. A French weather ship reports that it has received a second SOS signal coupled with the call sign of the French flying-boat missing with 52 persons on board. An American Flying Fortress over the Atlantic also reported receiving an SOS signal from the flying-boat.
BRITISH OFFICERS IN PAKISTAN PROTEST BY INDIA (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) NEW DELHI, Aug. 4. It is reliably reported that India has protested to Britain against the alleged employment of British Army officers in the Pakistan Army forces fighting in Kashmir. Indian official quarters stated that no British officer held an operational command in any Indian Army unit, and no British Indian Army officer had participated in the Kashmir fighting. Reuter’s correspondent says there are about 300 British officers in the Indian Army. In addition to the com-mander-in-chief (Lieutenant-General Sir Francis Bucher) there are some high-ranking British officers acting as advisers to technical branches of the Indian Army. The remaining British officers are specialists and technical personnel serving in army units. British volunteers for both the Indian and Pakistan Armies are subject to the appropriate British Army Act, and the British Government retains the right to withdraw all British volunteers if such action appears necessary at any time.
