FREE TERRITORY OF. TRIESTE

CHARGES AGAINST BRITAIN AND U.S. SECURITY COUNCIL HEARS JUGOSLAVIA (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 4. In spite of the recent Cominform attacks on Marshal Tito, the Soviet and the Ukraine to-day backed Jugoslavia in its fight with the West over Trieste. Jugoslavia claimed in the Security Council that Britain and the United States had violated the Italian peace treaty and that' the Western Powers were trying to make Trieste an Italian province. Dr. Philip Jessup (United States) and Sir Alexander Cadogan (Britain) replied that Jugoslavia had no foundation for the charges. They said they were surprised that the charges should come from a Government which in administering its zone of Trieste had paid no heed to its international obligations.

The Council adjourned without making a decision on Jugoslavia’s complaint.
