SUMMIT ROAD RESERVES
FIVE AREAS UNDER CITY CONTROL KENNEDY’S BUSH TO AHURIRI BUSH The vesting of five more scenic reserves gives the Christchurch City Council control over all reserves from the Cashmere tram terminus to Ahuriri bush, on the southern section of the Summit road. The Gazette last week announced the vesting in the City Council of reserves totalling more than 240 acres. The domains are:—Kennedy’s Bush, 126 acres; Hoon Hay Park, 41 acres; Cooper’s Knob reserve, 39 acres; Cass Peak reserve, 7 acres; and Ahuriri bush, 29 acres. Plans were being prepared by the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) for the renovation and remodelling of the Sign of th©*’Kiwi. It was hoped that it would be opened by the summer as a tea and rest room for walkers and motorists, said Cr. J. N. Clarke (chairman of the reserves committee) yesterday. Two tea rooms, the Sign of the Takahe at Victoria Park, and the Sign of the Kiwi, would then be available, under council control. The Sign of the Kiwi was at present unoccupied.
The Sign of the Bellbird at Kennedy’s Bush was in a deplorable condition and he was doubtful whether it could be made habitable, said Cr. Clarke. Every window had been broken and the building was in general collapse. The council would have to consider the rebuilding of the Sign of the at a later stage.
