WELLINGTON, August s‘, An invitation for a Maori team to visit Australia next year, provided it was early in the year, was accepted at to-day’s meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union. It was also decided to invite an Australian team to tour New Zealand later next season. It was decided to invite a Fijian side to make a short tour of New Zealand, mainly in the Auckland province, late this season. The question of the resumption of an interchange of visits between Australian and New Zealand Universities- was held over for further consideration.

The chairman (Mr A. St. C. Belcher) said the Maoris had built up a fine side, and should be a big attraction in Australia. It was hoped this tour would be on the same lines as* that last year for the All Blacks, and take place about the same time. Every effort should be made to have an Australian team in New Zealand’ next season. Otherwise there could be no Australian visit till 1951, as a British team would be in New Zealand in 1950.

Suggested dates for the tour of the Fijians were September 20 to October 23, but there would be no objection to an earlier visit provided unions could accept matches.

When Mr F. Sutherland- mentioned that Auckland, which was mainly interested in the visit, had been in touch with North Auckland. Thames Valley. King Country, and the Waikato for their wishes in the matter, Mr S. S. Dean said a match in Wellington was desirable to help recoup the expenses of the tour. There had been a heavy outlay in sending the Maori team to Fiji. It would not be till 1950 when the British team toured New Zealand that the union would be able to bolster up its funds, on which there had been very heavy demands in recent years.

After a letter from the Otago Rugby Referees' Association on the ruling making it compulsory for referees to blow the whistle every time the ball went into touch, it was decided to advise that the union had no .to alter the rules. The trend of discussion showed that in most unions the referees were using their own discretion.

Nominations for the manager and assistant manager of the New Zealand team for South Africa are to be in the hands of the union by the end of October. In reply to an inquiry, Mr F. Sutherland said New Zealand had agreed to a 5s a day allowance as the basis for future tours. After members had said there were different costs in various countries, the chairman said the country which acted as host would meet tills item. The 5s would be paid in South African currency next year.

“If a man has ever received money for playing Rugby League he should not, and cannot be reinstated as a Rugby player. This has been the union's policy for very many years,” said Mr S. S. Dean when the council discussed two applications for reinstatement by Rugby League players. Mr A. A. Baker said some players, including Lilburne, Cooke, and Nepia, had been reinstated on the ground of war e vice or its equivalent. He added: “I ' ink the gate was opened too wide when came to admitting men who had served n the Home Guard.”

The council decided that H. P. G. ■Valuer, who had played Rugby League n Onomsland and Auckland, and was low in Te Awamutu. should be reinstated because of his special circumstances. ' The application of F. Moses, Wellington, a former member of the Eastbourne Rugby Club, was declined.
