EMERGENCY USE OF PUBLIC TELEPHONES
Sir, —This is to suggest that it may be a good idea to have the emergency telephone numbers, printed on a card, displayed in public telephone boxes; say, just above the instrument.—Yours, etc., A.H.S. July 31/1948. [“lt is considered that the position is met by the numbers ■ being prominently listed on a special page immediately inside the front cover of the directory," said the Chief Postmaster (Mr D. R. Thomson) when this letter was referred to him. “It is our experience that cards are invariably disfigured by scribbling; and, in addition, there wouM be difficulty in affixing them to certain types of cabinets. The matter of enclosing the cards in glass cases has been considered, but is deemed not warranted on the score of expense, replacement of breakages; and on the need on occasions, for amendments to numbers to be made.”]
