KOREAN POWER DISPUTE

AMERICANS’ OFFER OF COMPROMISE

(Rec. 7 p.m.) SEOUL (Korea), July 22. The United States has offered a compromise in the stalemate between America and the Soviet over the electricity supply in Korea. The United States had previously insisted that the negotiators should be Americans and Russians. To-day, however, the United States offered to negotiate with Koreans designated by Russia as its representatives.

Russia has insisted that it has turned the power problem over to the North Korean Communist Government, and only Koreans could negotiate.

The American offer was made in a letter from the American occupation commander. Lieutenant-General John Hodge, to the Soviet commander at Pyongyang, Major-General S. P. Merkulov. The negotiations are aimed at the restoration of the flow of electric power from North Korea to South Korea, which the Communists cut off on May 14.
