A fortnight ago a retired British civil servant was living at. Sidcup, Kent, England. Now, with his sister, he is living in Timaru. The pair flew to New Zealand and came to Timaru, where, on Wednesday, they interviewed the Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) about housing. That day the Mayor had been interviewed by the relatives of an elderly woman living by herself on the outskrits of the borough, who wished to share her home with others in return for their company and assistance. Before the arrival of the English people Mr Hanan had offered this accommodation to two Timaru houseseekers, who had declined it because of the distance from the centre of the town. The Mayor told the two English people of this house, and yesterday they returned to tell him that they had spent the previous evening there and were returning to Christchurch to get their luggage. The Englishman’s wife and family are following him to New Zealand.
