INDUSTRIES FAIR
BUILDING WEEK AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
Though construction of stands has reachea only the framework stage in most cases, it is already clear that there will be radical changes in the general appearance of the New Zealand Industries Fair in King Edward Barracks this year. Most exhibits will be bigger than last year, and a much wider variety in treatment is apparent. Taking advantage of the roof height, a number of firms are building towers’ and turrets. The stands are grouped in straight lines to permit the free flow of traffic and all construction is being done in close consultation with the Fire Brigade to prevent any fire risks. Some exhibits are being fire-proofed. The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association was able to buy a good quantity of light building material from the War Assets Realisation Board several years ago and this is used each year at the fair. This year low-grade Pjnqs insignis has also been obtained, permitting more ambitious courts. Suitable timber salvaged after the fair will be sold for approved building. Organisers of the fair have secured casual labour not regularly engaged in the building industry, and the recent weather has made available a number of skilled tradesmen, so construction work is about a week ahead of schedule. Everything should be ready well before August 6, the opening date. This year the Government court will feature the*Aid for Britain Campaign. The Internal Marketing Division will demonstrate the processing of vegetables.
