TROTTING

NOW BEING TRAINED AT AUCKLAND

Certainty has been sold by B. Rushton to Mr M. V. Ward, and he is now being trained at Auckland, where he will do most of his racing in the new season. jtsred at Nightcaps in 1937, Certainty was educated by Rushton, who gained his first win with him in the Waverley Harness Trot at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on November 22. 1941. Later in the same season Certainty added the Telegraph Handicap to his record at the Racing Club’s meeting. Certainty gained one win in his nine starts as a five-year-old. and in- the following season he added two wins in 12 starts to his record. By this time Certainty had few opportunities to race in Southland, and after being placed in 'two of his first four races in the 1944-45 season, he was sent to Templeton to be trained by the late R. J. Humphreys, for whom he showed bis best form to finish second to his bracket-mate. Dundee Sandy, in the Craven Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter Meeting.

After three unplaced efforts. Certainty was taken over by Rushton. who started him in 16 in the next two seasons for two minor placings. Certainty subsequently joined V. Alborn’s team at Addington ancLLhe has done well this season to earn £1097 for two wins, a second, and a third.

By Quite Sure, which has sired the winners of 77 races this season, Certainty is out of a winner in Mountain Queen, die dam of other winners in Slieve Donard, Queen Margaret. Slieve View, and Heir Apparent. A hardy type, Certainty can show a good turn of speed when at his best, and he should be prominent in his races at Auckland next season. Jottings

A four-year-old mare by Spencer Volo from Esprit, both of whicn were imported to New Zealand, has been named Volo Petrex tor stud book purposes. The filly by Light Brigade from Abbey Volo will race as Soldier’s Daughter. Abbey Volo, which was bred by Mr J. R. McKenzie, is -by Abbedale from the Peter Volo mare, Widow Volo, which took a record of 2mih 63sec in America.

The Invercargill Trotting Club showed a profit of £45 on the year’s operations. Democrat, which earned £2005 when racing at the pacing gait this season, may be tried as a trotter next term. A six-year-old gelding by Swordsman from the Worthy Bond mare. Worthy Maid, has been registered as Swordw’orthv.

The following horses will be bracketed on the totalizator in the Washdyke Trot Handicap at the Sduth Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting to-day:—Big Bay and Sir Gamble, Commentator and Special Match, Inherit and Mowbray, Josedale Audubon and Kakahu Pride, Bon Voyage and Esperanto, Plausible and Tranquil, Luck Ahead and Westejn Queen, Ferry Pilot and Swithindale, Bay Jack, and Melvruse. The Invercargill trainer, J. Purdue, is working Native Hall, which was trained for her one race earlier in the season by A. Dawson. A four-year-old mare by Dillon Hall from Native Home. Native Hall is a sister to a fast pacer in Maori Home.

Maori Home, which earned £5205 this season for Messrs B. Rush ton and J. Duncan, appeals as a potential New Zealand Trotting Cup winner.

First Start

Bon Voyage, Tranquil Lady, Western Queen, Royal Volo, and Ferry Pilot are among the horses which will have their first start for the season in the Washdyke Trot Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting to-day. A five-year-old bay gelding, Bon Voyage, . which is trained at Tinwald by S. Townley for Messrs E. E. Townley and F. Young, is by Logan Fraser from Edith Voyage, which left a winner at the trotting gait in Loughros to Wrack.

Tranquil Lady, which is trained at Addington by D. A. Morland, who races her in partnership with Mr B. J. Prince, is a three-year-old filly by Dillon Hall from Sweet Repose, by Rey de Oro from Merry Rose, by Great Audubon from Princess Zoe, by a Rothschild colt from Hedvic.

The three-year-old filly Western Queen, which is trained at Ashburton by N. A. Wilson for Mr W. R. Thurlow, is by Gold Paper from Stella King, which is by Western King from a Ker wood mare. Ferry Pilot, which races in the interests of J. J. Brosnan, who trains him at Kerrytown. is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Ringtrue from Lady Norma. Royal Volo’s breeding attracts attention to his prospects. Owned by Mr R. Luke and trained at West Eyreton by O. Quinlan, Royal Volo is by the American-bred Lusty Volo from Queen Maud, which left high-class performers in Sports Guide to Gaillard, and Maudeen to Grattan Loyal. C. C. Devine has started work on a well-grown yearling colt by Gold Bar from Black Marble, which was bred at Ladbrooks by Mr J. Bell. A winner herself, Black Marble is by Nelson Derby from Grattan Derby, by Huia Dillon from Muriel Derby, by Mauritius from Lottie Derby, both of which were imported to New Zealand. May Win Soon

Driven by A. Townley, Sure Nut, which finished third to Milford Lad and Ben’s Son in the Trial Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on June 7, gave an encouraging performance to finish second to Yours Truly in the second Division of the Winter Trot Handicap at the Waimate Runt Club’s meeting on Saturday. AWix-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Wyuna. Sure Nut should win a race early in the new season for RTownley, who trains him at Tinwald.
