DROMORE ESTATES
PURCHASE SOUGHT BY CROWN
Permission to inspect the Dromore (Ashburton) estates with the tenants’ consent, was granted the Lands Department by the Akaroa Borough Council this week, at its monthly meeting. The Crown intends to purchase or lease the lands from the council for irrigation purposes wben the present leases expire within the next two years, but the council wishes to retain certain lands in the area. The Mayor. Mr R. Bruce, who was appointed the council’s spokesman for an interview in Christchurch with Mr T. W. Preston, Commissioner of Crown Lands, will attempt to persuade the Crown not to take over an area of about 1000 acres, because the council considers it is a satisfactory economic unit.
ft was reported that one of the tenants of the estates had consulted with the Mayor and councillors recently.
SERVICEMEN’S LAND BALLOT
Applications from returned servicemen who have been graded A for sheep and cattle grazing on Banks Peninsula are being invited by the Commissioner of Crown Lands for two farming properties at Purau. The sections comprise the Charteris farm settlement. which was recently acquired -by -the Crown from the properties of Messrs W. A. and H. H. H. Gardiner, and are of 919 acres and 847 acres respectively. The. sections may be taken under agreement for sale and purchase or on renewable lease, A ballot for the properties will be held on Wednesday, August 25, and possession will be given on September 1.
